Movie: The Descendants (2011)
Director: Alexander Payne
Starring: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, and Nick Krause
Plot: A man must deal with the fact that his wife is dying, cheated on him, and whether to sell away the family’s land.
Review: This is a great film about very real characters dealing with a very difficult and very real situation. The story is good. Interesting enough. But, the real magic is within the actors. Each and every performance in this movie in golden.
Clooney is fantastic. He proves, once again, that he really is one of the greatest actors of all time. The range of emotion he shows is unparalleled, especially when a lot of his most heart-wrenching scenes are him talking to his comatose wife. And it’s not just sadness. It’s anger. And love. He’s really amazing.
Surprisingly, Secret Life’s Woodley holds her own in this. She has a lot of really great moments of pure emotion that are unfortunately being overlooked by the Academy. The scene of her in the pool alone should’ve been more than enough for a best supporting actress nod. And, Krause provides very amusing comedic relief.
But, the best thing about this movie is the fact that its not completely depressing. Sure. It deals with a lot of really tough subjects, but there’s still this sense of fun that’s hard to explain. I very much enjoyed it.
